Frequently Asked Questions About Acupuncture in Calgary

What can I expect?

During the initial exam a full health history will be taken. The acupuncturist will check your pulse, look at your tongue and conduct the appropriate physical exam. After a diagnosis according to Traditional Chinese Medicine is made, you will then receive an acupuncture treatment.

For your acupuncture treatment, fine sterile disposable needles will be inserted at acupuncture points throughout the body. You may feel a radiating sensation when the needle is inserted, and it generally lasts for a few moments. During the remainder of the treatment a dull heavy sensation may be felt as well. Commonly, the needles will be left in for fifteen to thirty minutes.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments vary from person to person. Some people experience immediate relief while others may take more time. Chronic conditions usually take longer to resolve than acute problems. The frequency of visits also varies depending upon the condition. You may need to have treatments twice a week or only monthly maintenance visits.

How will I feel?

During the treatment you may feel energized or deeply relaxed. When the needles are inserted you may feel a vague numbness, heaviness, tingling or dull ache. You may even experience an energy sensation spreading from the needle. This is called a “Qi” sensation. All these reactions are a good sign that the treatment is working.

How safe is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is extremely safe. All the needles are sterile, used once and then disposed of.

Acupuncture is a natural therapy that helps with stress, anxiety and depression. Do the needles hurt and how deep do they go?

The sensation from the needle varies from patient to patient. Some people feel a little pain when the needles go in, but most people feel nothing. The needles are inserted at varying depths depending upon the insertion site.
